VIDEO: The California Dream Act at SF State

Governor Jerry Brown has some thinking to do. On his desk sits Assembly Bill 131, more commonly known as the California Dream Act. Passed by the State Senate on Friday with a 45-27 vote, the California Dream Act would allow undocumented youth in California to pursue higher education.

The issue of undocumented students hits close to home, and several members of the SF State community have spoken out about the subject. This video provides some insight into the students and organizers on the SF State campus affected by the issue.

Video shot by Erik Verduzco. Interview by Sandra Lopez.

I’m going to renounce my U.S. citizenship so I too, can get a free “higher” education.

    And welfare…and food stamps…and section 8 housing…and a driver’s license…and exemption from the law…and exemption from taxes…

I mean, what’s the point in being a citizen of the U.S. anymore when illegal immigrants get more rights and freedoms than we do?

Aww, I’m going to cry–Not! More Sob Stories. Notice how she is getting her Masters without the use of any public funds. Notice how they use the term, “undocumented immigrant student”. Hmm–I guess they haven’t the read the title and contents of AB 131 (DREAM Act–Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) because it refers to giving State and Federal Funds, Fee (Tuition) Waivers to ILLEGAL ALIEN MINORS. Notice how no one mentions that tuition and fees have risen drastically and that many US Citizens and Legal Immigrant Students will not get any assistance or have their aid reduced.

Read AB 131 and see how much of the store is being given away to a group that, even if they receive these public funds, cannot be employed Legally in the US and would have received a free higher education and leave our country to work. This displaces and economic benefit, taxes, or payback we would ever receive as a Federal DREAM Act is not even on the horizon that would grant them a quick way to citizenry.
