Within the three years McNeill has been with the Gators, he has been injured nearly every semester; his first year he had a strained ankle ligament and a concussion, and last year he strained his MCL. Despite his injuries, McNeill came to the Gators as a huge addition; last season – his healthiest yet – he started in 17 games, recorded 62 saves, 52 shutouts, and contributed to 7 wins.
McNeill said being confined to the sidelines is frustrating, but he’s staying positive for his team. His motivational attitude is what led to him being named captain, but McNeill now tries to find his new role off the field.
“Being goalkeeper, you’re a leader no matter what, and being captain especially. When you’re on the field it’s the heat of the moment,” McNeill said. “But off the field, I have to stand back and evaluate. It’s no more follow my lead.”
Hunter acknowledges the unlucky timing of McNeil’s injury.
“Any time you lose a player who’s geared up for the season it’s unfortunate,” Hunter said. “I know for Mike, he’s frustrated…but he’s around always putting his two cents in.”
McNeill readily accepts his new position as leader on the sidelines. He, along with his coach, is hopeful he can red shirt for the season, train over the summer, and come back next year for a strong season. Hunter said McNeill is staying significant to the team by being at every game and practice, supporting his teammates.
“Hopefully it’ll be rehab in the spring, pick it up over the summer, and come in next year 100 percent,” McNeill said. “Until then it’s important to still stay a part of the team.”
