Komen Foundation questionably snubs porn site's donations

Watch boobs and save some while you’re at it, PornHub says.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the popular porn site wanted to donate one cent per each 30 breast-related videos viewed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. PornHub is the third most visited porn site on the internet, according to Alexa.com, a website that evaluates facts and information for websites. With more than 50 million views per month, PornHub said the foundation would receive a large donation.

For unknown reasons, the Susan G. Komen foundation turned down the donation and demanded the porn site to refrain from using its name. PornHub pledged to find another nonprofit organization to accept their donation.

It’s hypocritical that the foundation denied PornHub’s donation, yet approved donations from other controversial companies.

The Komen foundation was started in 1982 and has made a big name for itself in the last decade not only due to its cause, but fundraising and exposure. From water bottles to hair dryers, the foundation has become a brand that many corporations want to be a part of.

The Komen foundation raised more than a few eyebrows in recent years after it agreed to collaborate with certain companies in order to display its iconic pink ribbon on thier products. In 2010, KFC introduced Buckets for a Cure, where both fried and grilled chicken were sold in pink buckets and proceeds were donated to the foundation. Komen received criticism because this allegedly promoted the sale of unhealthy fast food.

In 2002, American Express participated in a similar program called Charge for a Cure where each time an American Express credit card was used, one cent was donated to the Komen foundation. Walther firearms, distributor of Smith & Wesson, designed a 9 mm pistol called the M&P9 JG where proceeds of the pistol’s sales went toward breast cancer education, research and treatment.

It’s ironic that these guns were bought for the purpose of saving lives.

I support pornography when it’s consensual and safe. In this day and age, more people have easy and discreet access to porn. Thirty percent of all internet activity is browsing through pornographic sites, according to Extreme Tech, a weblog site about technology. As the 66th most popular website on the internet, according to Alexa.com, PornHub could have easily raised a significant donation in a short time.

Yes, PornHub is a porn site, but that should not be the reason why the donation was declined. People of all ages, races and economic statuses watch porn — just like women who are affected by breast cancer.

How is it insulting to receive a donation that could help save someone’s life? If you were dying of cancer and a porn site CEO wanted to help you by paying for your treatment, you would say no? I don’t think so.

The Susan G. Komen organization is corrupt and does nothing to save women from breast cancer. Being aware does not save women from having their breasts cut off. Being aware does nothing to save you from having debilitating chemotherapy. Being aware does nothing to save your skin from third degree burns from radiation. Being aware does nothing to save your life when you have stage four breast cancer. Did you know that 35,000 women die of breast cancer every year?

Breasts are sexual. However, breasts are also used to nourish infants. It isn’t all about the sex. Sex is the last thing on your mind when you hear that you have breast cancer. You are wondering if you are going to be alive when your kids graduate from high school. You are wondering if you are going to be disfigured. You are wondering if you are going to die in pain. Watching a porn video in the category “tits“ 30 times in order to earn a penny is insulting. Pornhub is making a lot more money than that by the free publicity they are receiving due to their “donation.“ No legitimate charity is going to take this money.

Your article lacked information on what current breast cancer patients and what people who have died of breast cancer think about all this pink crap.

Being aware has everything to do with survival rates from early detection. Susan G. Komen has been instrumental in the increase to survival rates of breast cancer diagnosis since 1982 and Susan G. Komen does a lot more than educate. The affiliates also fund local organizations and health clinics that provide diagnostic services and breast cancer treatment support programs. 75% of the proceeds from fundraisers remain in the local service areas where they were raised. 25% funds groundbreaking national and global research.
That’s why Susan G. Komen has so much support, nobody else out there approaches the treatment of breast cancer and breast health in this way!
