Baseball team sweeps double header against Cal State Stanislaus

UPDATE: Dominant starting pitching, allowing only two runs in both games combined, gave the Gators the edge in the sweep over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors Saturday afternoon at Mahoney Field.

The Warriors came out swinging, scoring two runs and leading for the first half of the game. Starting pitcher Jack Veronin shut the Warriors down for the rest of the game, pitching eight innings only allowing two runs.

“All aspects of today were great and energy as well,” said Grady Espinosa, left fielder for the Gators. “Probably the best games we had this season.”

The final game of the double header was also dominated by pitching and solid offense from the Gators. The Gators took advantage of some early mental errors made by Cal State Stanislaus and scored the first two runs off Warrior throwing errors.

Starting pitcher Ryan Bohnet threw a complete seven-inning shutout, allowing only seven hits which rattled the Warrior offense. Catcher Mark Lindsay, the Gators leader in batting average, was one for three, with one RBI.

“We were swinging the bats a lot better than the Friday night game,” said Lindsay. “Our pitching was way better and we attacked.”

The Gators gained a little retribution with their two wins after losing Friday night 6-1 to the Warriors.

In the 2013 season, SF State played against CSUs four times and won each of those games. Going into this four-game series, based off history, the Gators had an advantage.

“This team definitely had a lot of better hitters than last season,” said Espinosa, “They must have came back for vengeance.”

The Gators gained momentum heading into the final game of the four-game series, which will be on Sunday afternoon in Turlock. The Gators now move up in the CCAA with these two wins, giving them a 2-1 record.

The Gators baseball team swept Cal State Stanislaus Warriors in their doubleheader Saturday afternoon with dominant pitching in both games.

Starting pitcher, Ryan Bohnet, pitched all seven innings of the second game of the day, as he shut out the Warriors, 5-0.

Cal State Stanislaus was only able to score two runs combined in both games.

Gators fall behind early in the first game, but was able to come back and win 5-2.
