Thirty-nine arrests were made at the Occupy Cal demonstration after protesters refused to take down tents on the UC Berkeley campus.

Demonstrators organized a general assembly Wednesday afternoon and approved a motion to establish an encampment on the lawn adjacent to Sproul Hall in alignment with the Occupy Wall Street movement.

English Professor Celeste Langan was among those who were arrested.

The UC Berkeley administration sent an email warning students not to set up tents, according to university officials.

Hundreds of people gathered around Sproul Hall late at night as the general assembly discussed upcoming events set to take place next week.

The general assembly approved a university-wide strike for Tuesday.

“People are angry. They’re angry about the disregard that the people in charge have for our future in terms of education, the environment, etc.,” said Erik K., 21, UC Berkeley mathematics major. “They don’t want to make the world for my kids and I’m really pissed off about that.”

Occupy SF protesters provided Wi-Fi access to the Occupy Cal demonstration and was among one of the many groups supporting the movement.

“We have to keep this energy up,” said Blitz Ono, member of Occupy SF. “This isn’t just happening in California, it goes over the oceans and will spread to other cities and UCs.”
