Students gathered anxiously at the Serramonte Center May 11 to await the results of a string of tweets released from talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
The first of several tweets appeared May 8, saying “Hey, Daly City, CA! I hope you get a lot of rest this weekend because on Monday you’re gonna have a chance to be on my show @SFSU.”
“I first saw it on my Facebook feed for Twitter and I subscribed and got all the details,” said Devika Botejue, a Biology major.
DeGeneres’ tweets prompted students to go to Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Serramonte Center by 2 p.m. with a ball and a drawing of their favorite emoji on it.
Although she was not there in the flesh, DeGeneres’ assistants who are also featured in the show ran the event,, including Jeannie Klisiewicz.
Students rushed to draw faces and pizza emojis on balls of all different sizes. Klisiewicz told students to get creative and walked around to choose finalists with the best projects.
Kinesiology major Brianna Magrath used a pink ball to make a princess emoji. She topped it off with a wig and crown. Magrath was chosen to be one of the finalists for the most creative emoji idea.
“I’m so excited,’ Magrath said as she waited with other finalists. “I’m shaking.”
