Not even two overtimes could provide a winner Sunday when the San Francisco State women’s soccer team tied 1-1 against Humboldt State University.

The Gators came out with a great pace and energy to start out the game. In the first ten minutes alone the Gators had two shots bounce off the post.

“I think the game Friday really helped us and motivated us to really come out strong for this game,” freshman forward Isabella Nazario said.

After surviving the barrage of early shots the Lumberjacks took the lead early in the 23rd minute on a free kick from 30 yards out that took an unlucky bounce and somehow managed to get in.

The Gators outshot the lumberjacks 7-2 in the first half but would end up going into halftime trailing 1-0.

“We kinda panicked a little when they got their goal,” said Gators head coach Tracy Hamm. “We kinda settled into the game and started playing to our strengths again.”

The Gators wouldn’t let the early deficit keep them down and continued to dominate possession and shots to close out the second half.

“It all comes down to character, as soon as you get scored on it shows what kind of team you are and what kind of individual player you are,” said Nazario. “As soon as you are down you have to go and work harder that you did previously.”

In the second half the Gators displayed their character, and it was more of the same offensive attack from the first half before they finally scored.

After a run down the side of the field, midfielder Kelsey Wetzstein crossed a ball inside the box that ricocheted off one of the Lumberjacks defenders for an own goal.

“Kelsey crossed it and the girl misjudged it and kicked it in her own goal,” said Gator defender Laura Shea. “It was very fortunate for us.”

The Gators would utilized their fitness and speed late in the second half to put pressure on the Lumberjacks defenders, according to Coach Hamm.

“We are a very fit team and we know that,” said coach Hamm. “The last 20 and 30 min of games we focus on just running at teams and trying to create chances in behind because we know the other teams are gettin a lil tired.”

“We needed to score that second goal to get the win so we kept going for it,” said Shea. “We couldn’t stop, unfortunately it didn’t come.”

After this tie and a loss over the weekend head Coach Tracy Hamm said she is aware that if the team wants a chance to extend their season into the playoffs, then they will have to convert those missed goal opportunities.

“For the longevity of our season we need to win the rest of the our games,” said Coach Hamm. “It’s a big challenge but I think we can do it. We need to stay positive and just keep working on the things we can handle and get some wins.”

The Gators play on the road this Friday when they take on Cal State San Marcos.
