Most San Franciscans are heavily invested in local sports; in fact, several could probably rattle off Pablo Sandoval’s batting average or how many turnovers Alex Smith averages per game. Far fewer, however, are familiar with at least one local sports team, despite the fact that they are 43 years old.
The San Francisco Bay Bombers roller derby team, founded in 1968, is part competitive athletics, part entertainment.
The Bay Bombers took on the New York Chiefs on Saturday at Kezar Pavilion, attracting fans of all ages, including plenty of first-time spectators.
Although the roller derby teams are co-ed, men and women compete separately. Athletes play a total of eight quarters, with four played entirely by women and four played entirely by men. At the end of the game, the points by the women and men are totaled to choose the winning team.
On this particular night, the Bay Bombers defeated the visiting Chiefs by a final score of 58-53.
