Despite a drizzling rain that threatened to damper festivities, a large crowd of San Franciscans turned out at the Embarcadero tonight for what has become the Valentine’s Day ritual Pillow Fight. Part organized event, part open-invitation party, the pillow fight drew a crowd of roughly 150 to 200 people early in the night, but the crowd swelled about an hour into the event. With feathers flying, fight-goers attacked friends and random strangers with the softest of weapons, many of them in costumes. The party is one of many such events scheduled for Valentine’s Day, including one earlier in the day in San Jose’s Cesar Chavez Square. Two years ago, SFPD threatened a crackdown on the SF event after another rainy-day fight ended in thousands of dollars in clean up costs, but tonight’s event went off without any such interruption.
