A large tree branch that fell on Lake Merced Boulevard before 6 p.m. crushed a parked car, blocking traffic for hours.
“When I came out here it was already smashed,” said Abraham Iniguez, a physiology major. “I hit the panic button on the car and I am like ‘Yea, it is mine.’”
Iniguez explained that everyone was already on the scene and cleaning up the damage by the time he arrived. He also explained that because the incident took place after hours and no injuries occurred it will be difficult to determine who will take responsibility.
“The problem is ownership and [no one is] working right now,” Iniguez said.
It is unclear if the property is owned by the city of San Francisco or Parkmerced or why the tree fell in the first place.
The car, a silver four-door toyota, had to be towed away due to severe damage and broken windows.
University police responded to the incident, but didn’t take a police report because it wasn’t on University property and there were no injuries.
SF State police speculated that the property is actually part of Parkmerced.
As of 7:45 p.m. crews were still working to clear away the tree and car.
