Update 4:45 p.m.: A male in a wheelchair was on the Muni tracks and was struck by a train around noon at Civic Center station, according to the San Francisco Police Department. It is unclear why he was on the tracks.
According to Sergeant Michael Andraychak, the victim who was struck by the train has died.
Aaron Barclay, a passenger on the second car of the train involved in the incident, said the train operator’s intercom was activated after the train braked from full speed.
“We heard a man scream over the intercom, which we assumed was the operator,” Barclay said. “I heard someone mention a wheelchair in an excited voice. I was watching through the windows into the first car trying to determine if they needed assistance when a woman from the front came in crying. That’s when I was sure we had hit someone.”
After rescue personnel arrived, Barclay said that police entered the train and began taking statements from passengers. Word spread around the car that police were searching for the man’s leg beneath the train.
“Everyone was kind of glum in the car, having no idea if the man survived,” he said.
All underground Muni service has resumed. Shuttles remain in place until Muni is back on regular schedule.
“This type of accident can take weeks to months before final investigative reports. The trains have cameras inside, no telling yet if those will be helpful,” said Andraychak.
Update 1:35 p.m.: The victim is a male between the ages of 50 and 60 years old, according to Paul Rose, a spokesman for San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency.
The train involved in the incident is being cleared and service is working on being restored.
