A water pipe burst in the Creative Arts Building early this morning resulting in a flood that has the building shut down until further notice.

The burst pipe, which was on the first floor, was discovered at 4:30 a.m., according to Nan Broadbent, spokeswoman for SF State.

Professional cleaning services have been called in to assess the damage and are expected to update administrators around 11 a.m. with an estimated time when the building will be reopened.

Although some classes were cancelled, usually a welcome development for students, some were dismayed at the timing of the notifications.

“I did get a call and a text message,” said Sal Jimenez, a broadcast and electronic arts major. “I  don’t know if it happened hours ago or recently, but I didn’t get the messages until ten minutes before class started.”

Nikki Pena, also a broadcast and electronic arts major, was upset that she made the long trip to school, only to find her class wouldn’t be taking place.

“It sucks because this was the class where he (the professor) was going to assign labs,” she said. “I commuted all the way from the East Bay and my next class isn’t until three.”

The creative arts building has been partially reopened as of 1 p.m. today with some classes taking place in their regularly scheduled rooms. All other classes have been relocated.
