Last Thursday’s part-time job fair, hosted by the Student Involvement & Career Center (SICC), provided SF State job seekers an opportunity to find employment.

This event gathered 33 business representatives into the Quad by the Cesar Chavez Student Center and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Off-campus employers recruited current and recent SF state students for part-time work.

The SICC expected student response to be high, and employers weren’t disappointed.

“The timing of this event was perfect, right at 11 we just got swarmed, whoever picked the time, it was perfect,” said Sandyha Latham Presidio YMCA recruiter.

Other employers included Uniqlo apparel company, Wells Fargo Bank, and Wondersitter, a babysitting agency.

Senior Candra Cooper just happened to stumble upon the event. The kinesiology major is looking for work in a sports program and hoped to apply for positions with the YMCA.

“I was actually just walking by, I didn’t even know we were having this today, but I do need a part-time job,” she said, holding her stack of papers.

Many college students are finding they need to work to support themselves while attending school.

A United States Department of Labor report shows 69.2 percent of part-time college students have a job or are looking for work while 33.9 percent of full-time students are employed.

But finding those jobs can be difficult.

“We hire about 10 percent of applicants, we have a very strict vetting process,” said Chris Franklin owner and founder of Wondersitter, a babysitting agency that links babysitters to families. “We have more jobs to fill everyday.”

Wells Fargo Bank also has a in-depth hiring process; including an online application and a phone interview followed by an in-person interview often in a group. Once hired, however, even part-time employees recieve full medical and dental benefits and after a year they are also eligible for tuition reimbursement.

“With 60 locations in San Francisco alone, we have positions becoming available all the time,” said Jason Robinson Wells Fargo recruiter.

The SICC offers many more resources for students who are looking for work or having difficulty finding a job, including workshops on interviewing and resume help.

Walk-in counselor sessions are also available every Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the SICC is currently looking to add one more counselor to help meet demand.
