Today kicks off SF State’s fourth annual Sustainability Fest, an event designed to draw attention to green initiatives on university campuses nationwide.

The University has expanded the nationwide event Campus Sustainability Day into a two day event covering Oct. 23 and 24.

It’s a time to recognize the successes, challenges, and innovation of sustainability in higher education on each campus, according to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education website.

“Sustainability can be hard to define and we want to educate people about what it means to live sustainably,” said Caitlin Steele, the office of sustainability coordinator. “We hope the event will educate the SF State community about how to live a more sustainable life.”

This years event will be hosted in memory of Justin Valdez, the SF State student murdered in September, who was an active member of ECO Students.

“It’s a way for us to commemorate his memory in something he would have been a part of,” said Tyler Wescott, ECO students president.

The club first met Valdez at last year’s scavenger hunt; after that he became heavily involved in and attended every meeting and activity they hosted, said Wescott.

Day one

Bike to Campus Day

Teaching students about sustainability projects around the campus.

Photo booth

10 a.m to 2 p.m.

Students can take pictures in a sustainability themed photo booth and enter to win prizes in a raffle.

A Hunting game

Outside the Student Services Building

Students can learn about campus landscape and a chance to win a baby plant.

Day Two

Create to Relate

10 a.m to 4 p.m.

Where there will be fun activities for expressing creativity.

Garden Harvest Festival

12 p.m to 1 p.m.

At the garden behind Mary Park Hall

Students can harvest vegetables and learn about urban agriculture.

Green Chef Challenge

1 p.m to 3 p.m.

The Centennial Walkway,

Six teams will compete in an iron chef esque competition including a secret ingredient. Dr. Wong’s wife will be participating as a judge for the event.

Food Justice Panel

3 p.m to 4 p.m.

Rosa Parks A-C

Students, faculty and local non-profits will participate in a discussion about food and agriculture.

ECO Film Night

5 p.m.

Village Courtyard

Featuring the film “Vegucated” a documentary about people trying veganism.
