No injuries were reported when firefighters busted through a bedroom window to extinguish a minor blaze at an apartment building in University Park North this evening.

Police and firefighters responded at around 5:30 p.m. to the sixth floor at 225 Buckingham Way, where they deemed a minor fire accidental, according to Lorrie Kalos, battalion chief for the San Francisco Fire Department.

“(The fire) could have gotten a lot bigger if we didn’t come here fast enough,” Kalos said, adding that the building will need minor remodeling work after the incident.

Several fire trucks and police cars blocked off Buckingham Way while residents evacuated the building.

“We saw them break the window and then the smoke subsided,” said UPN resident Madeline Harris, who lives on the sixth floor a few apartments down from where the fire started. “It was very smoky.”

Blaring fire alarms are no strange incident at the apartment complex, according to UPN resident Zeydy Esquivel.

“Usually it’s a false alarm but today it was just the alarm going off constantly for about 10 minutes or less,” Esquivel said, adding that the firefighters are usually very good with responding to fire alarms because of their close proximity to the apartments.

The closest fire station is less than a quarter-mile away from where the fire took place.

“We come down here quite often,” Kalos said.
