De Kai, author of “Raising AI: An Essential Guide to Parenting Our Future” coming June 3 from MIT Press, is an AI professor who built the web’s first global language translator spawning Google and Microsoft Translate. He is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Distinguished Research Scholar at the International Computer Science Institute at UC Berkeley. He is responsible for foundational advancements in statistical Natural Language Processing and machine translation, with his doctoral dissertation being among the earliest to champion machine learning-based approaches. He is also one of 17 scientists named by the Association for Computational Linguistics as a Founding ACL Fellow. Beyond academia, De Kai actively engages with the ethical and policy dimensions of AI, serving as an independent director of The Future Society.
