VIDEO: San Franciscans remember 1906 earthquake

Sirens wailed up and down Market Street as San Franciscans celebrated the 106th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake early Tuesday morning.

Antique fire trucks ferried the remaining survivors, George Quilici and Winne Hook, both 106, to the corner of Market and Kearny to Lotta’s Fountain, where citizens gathered after the quake in 1906.

A moment of silence was observed in honor of the 3,000 people who lost their lives in the tremor and Mayor Ed Lee hung a commemorative wreath on the fountain with the help of Supervisor Scott Weiner.

“The rebirth of our city is still with us,” the mayor said. “We are getting ready, more and more prepared.”
