In a desperate attempt to win their four-game series against CSU Monterey Bay Saturday, the Gators softball team struggled in the last doubleheader that ended in defeat.
Losing 1-2 to the Otters in game one, SF State pushed hard against CSUMB’s number one pitcher Kylie Linnane. Despite an opportunity to win game two, the Gators fell again to the Otters 6-3.
The beginning of game two began eerily similar to first.
Trailing 0-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the game looked to be ending in yet another devastating loss.
It wasn’t until the Gators’ Kendra Wood hit a sacrifice fly into center field in the bottom of the seventh, giving third-baseman Lea Cardenas a run, did the Gators spring back to life.
With pinch-runner Kylie Herrada on third, the pressure for the Gators to make a comeback intensified as pinch-hitter, Kelly Mast, stepped up to the plate. Mast made contact with the ball, singling into center earning 2 RBIs and tying up the game 3-3, sending the Gators into extra innings.
With a sudden spark of energy the Gators looked to taking control of the game, yet their fire dwindled as the Otters rallied in the top of the eighth, securing their win 6-3.
The Gators will take on their rivals, Grand Canyon, at home in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 12 p.m.
