Two goals from two Cal State San Bernardino juniors spoiled senior day for the SF State women’s soccer team.

The Coyotes put a damper on the Gators final regular season game this Sunday with a 2-0 win. The Gators end the year with a 6-7-3 conference record, finishing just outside of the playoff picture — six points behind fourth place finisher Cal State LA.

“(I’m) a little disappointed in the way we played,” said head coach Jack Hyde. “We didn’t play well in all facets of the game, everything went wrong.”

The loss tarnished the last game for the Gators’ four seniors, Mari Mendizabal, Chloe Harrington, Lauren Floro and Nicole Smith.

“Obviously we fell short,” Smith said.  “But we worked so hard and came so far that its hard not to look back and feel accomplished for what we did.”

Both Mendizabal and Smith were holdovers from the 2010 team that won the school’s first CCAA conference championship.

“It’s weird looking back,” Smith said.  “We say it every time before we step onto this field, we are a family, and these girls are my family.”

It was a tale of two seasons for the Gators, who struggled to a 2-5-1 record through the first half of the season before going 4-2-2 to close the year.  They leapfrogged six teams in the CCAA conference during their streak on their way to a top-six conference finish and conclude the year with a third place finish in the north division after being in last place less than a month before.

“This team fought back when literally no one thought that we could.” Floro said. “It says a lot our team that even though at the beginning of the season it looked like we couldn’t do anything (we came back) and we honestly couldn’t be prouder.”

Cal State San Bernardino came into the game ranked 25 in the country and in first place in the CCAA south division. They clinched the third seed in the CCAA playoffs with the win Sunday.

This was the second year in a row that SF State has ended the season strong after a rocky start, as they started last year 4-8-1 before losing only once in their last five games.

“You’re upset that we could have been a point away,” Floro said.  “But compared to last year this is miles ahead and I think this programs going to lift off, so disappointing in the moment but encouraging for the future.”
