Don’t just call it a comeback, call it a win as well.
Unable to score after four innings and down four runs, SF State rallied in the fifth and seventh innings to take the series opener against Cal State L.A., 5-4 April 11.
“Luck has been kind of against us for a while,” said head coach Mike Cummins. “We found a way when Mark (Lindsay’s) ball kind of made a Q-shot and got away from the guy for what ended up being the winning run.”
After the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the fourth to double their lead, the Gators responded with a three-run inning to cut the deficit to one.
“Their starting pitcher wasn’t pitching so well in the fourth and fifth,” said outfielder Carter Loud. “They had a new guy come in and we just decided to jump on him.”
After Cal State L.A. sat down its starting pitcher Ryan Santhon after six innings, the Gators took advantage of reliever Chris Oropesa, scoring two runs off him to secure the lead and eventually the win.
Although SF State gave up 15 hits, the Golden Eagles could not capitalize and failed to score for the rest of the game after being up 4-0.
“We came out a little slow in the sticks but we kept our morale up and still won this game,” pitcher Cory Davis said. “This was a real team effort.”
Davis came in for the final inning and gave up only one hit and a walk to get his ninth save of the season.
“(Davis) has done a really good job for us. His last couple of times he’s gotten roughed up a little bit but he’s our guy,” said Cummins. “That might tie the school record for saves but if not I know he’s getting close.”
Gators starting pitcher Ryan Romero threw a total of four innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits to go with three strikeouts. Relief pitcher Tyler Cobb picked up the win and is now 1-1 for the season.
The Gators are now 14-21 for the season with a 9-16 record in the conference. Their next game will be a double-header tomorrow at home as they continue their series against Cal State L.A.
