The SF State women’s volleyball team upset No. 7 ranked c in five sets Friday night to claim its second conference win of the season, breaking a 28-game losing streak against the Coyotes from 1992. The Gators came out strong in the first set winning 25-20 over the Coyotes, but a series of errors gave the opponents two straight sets, and a commanding 2-1 lead.
After falling behind 2-1, senior Melissa Horton said coach Jill Muhe wouldn’t let the team drop its spirit. “She told us to go out there and battle, and we came together really well as a team. It was a team effort tonight and we had each other’s backs and it showed,” said Horton. During the intermission of the 3rd and 4th set, coach Muhe tried to get the team back to what they were doing right in the first set and regain momentum. “We did certain things that were working for us, and then we stopped doing them,” Muhe said. “We managed to get back to what was working for us and we got games four and five,” The fourth set was hard fought between both teams, exchanging points the whole way until the Gators took a final 25-23 win. The Gators knew the value in each point, and pulled out the fifth and final set in dramatic fashion over its favored opponent. The crowd made themselves known by providing a loud and hostile environment, giving the Gators a real home-court advantage. “The crowd was fantastic, and getting to open up in the brand new gym was awesome,” Muhe said. “There was a lot of great energy in the gym-thats what home games are all about,” The volleyball team was the first to christen the brand new court that was unveiled last week. Senior Melissa Horton and Junior Kaileen Mejia led the team with 16 kills each in a come-from-behind victory. Senior Jacquie Brice had 51 assist. Mejia attributed her success in the game to the teamwork and the support she received from the rest of the team. “My teammates helped me succeed in this game,” Mejia said. SF State (4-4) has a quick turnaround with Humboldt State (4-3) tomorrow night on campus.
