The SF State women’s volleyball team lost to the Humboldt State University Lumberjacks in four sets last Saturday.

The game started rough for the Gators, with the team playing more as six individuals than as a cohesive unit. They lost the first two sets 25-17 and 25-16.

“We’re looking to improve on coming together more as a team and just being competitive as a team,” senior setter Jacquie Brice said.

The Gators took control early, but the Lumberjacks nearly came back to take the set. SF State kept its composure, and took the third set 25-22.

“Humboldt was playing a fantastic match,” said coach Jill Muhe. “They played really well, they didn’t make any errors.”

In the fourth and final set, the Gators were unable to produce like they did in the third, but fought the Lumberjack’s offensive onslaught and teamwork.

“I don’t think we were consistent being a team the whole time,” senior outside hitter Jaclyn Clark said. “Humboldt was a team throughout the whole match and we kind of had ups and downs so I think our side of the net was our issue.”

The Gators dropped their second game of the double-header also after they pulled off an upset over No. 7 ranked CSU San Bernardino the night before. Muhe expects the team to finish better in back-to-back games as the season progresses.

“The double header is what it is. That’s the way the conference is structured and everybody is playing by it, so its learning to put two back-to-back, high-level performances together and we’ll get there,” Muhe said.

Clark led the team with 10 kills and Brice led the team with 37 assists in the loss to Humboldt state.

The Gators will host Cal Poly Palomino (5-3) Sept. 26 at 7p.m.

“We are looking forward to be able to play again,” Muhe said. “I mean there is still a lot of volleyball left to be played in conference and that’s exciting.”
