The SF State women’s volleyball team dropped the second game of a back to back saturday night to one of the divisions worst teams, Cal State Stanislaus, in straight sets.
The Gators came out sluggish to start the game, and dug themselves an early deficit. Despite battling back, the Gators couldn’t keep up, and lost the set 25-22.
“I don’t think it was fatigue today, I think it was more mental,” Jaclyn Clark said. “We were just not really mentally prepared, and took this game a little lightly.”
In the second set, the Gators started to show signs of life and took an early 6-2 advantage, but the Warriors took advantage of some SF State miscues and made a push to take the set 25-21.
The Gators then went into halftime down 0-2.
CSU Stanislaus came out with energy in the third set and took a 10-5 set lead. The Gators could not seem to get on the same page with each other and never gained any momentum. SF State lost the set 25-23.
“It seemed like we took a bunch of little plays off,” junior Bria Morgan said. “Everyone just took a play off here and there and it resulted in a loss.”
The Gators were without seniors Melissa Horton and Jazmine Williams who sat with injuries. Their presence and leadership was missed throughout the night.
“Any time you change the lineup from an injury stand point, there’s always an adjustment period,” head coach Jill Muhe said. “So I think we missed them and their experience out there on the floor. People stepping out means that people have to take up the slack of that role when that happens.”
Clark continued to play well and had 20 kills to lead the Gators.
“I work hard for my team and everything I do is because of my team,” Clark said. “I couldn’t really do it without them so I try to be consistent enough and hope it works out”
SF State continues its Saturdays struggles and its inability to win back to back games. The team is 0-5 on Saturdays coming off a Friday win.
“I think we come in with a little too much confidence and I think we should humble ourselves on the second day a little bit more,” Morgan said. “Everyone is beatable, so we have to come out with a better attitude and know that teams can beat us and we need to step our game up.”
The Gators (7-9) continue their four game home stand next Friday against a very good Cal State L.A. (8-3) team. They look to make a push towards the regional playoffs and qualify for the tournament.
