SF State’s women’s soccer team suffered their second loss in a row on Sunday by a score of 2-1 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The loss now extends a season long winless streak to six games for the Gators whose records seems to have gone cold after enjoying seven straight games without a loss right before this streak.
“I think we came out flat,” said Gators head coach Tracy Hamm. “It’s really hard to bounce back after a really intense game on Friday and match that same level we had.”

It was a slow start to the game for the Gators until late in the 35th minute when they were awarded a free kick. The initial pass landed in the box and bounced around before midfielder
Kelsey Wetzstein was able to settle the ball and flick a pass over to forward Kimber Lohman who then hit the back of the net for her team leading third goal of the year.
It was the first goal in over two games for the Gators.
They managed to keep up the pressure for the rest of the half nearly scoring again in the 42nd minute. That near miss would come back to bite them in the second half.
The Gators seemed to be in control until the 60th minute where the game would turn. The Toros managed to tie it up with a corner kick and then score again in the 65th minute off a header on a free kick.
“I think we did let up a little after the goal,” said midfielder Sydney Stout. “I think we let their record get into our head, and we didn’t come out as hard as we should have.”
Both goals in a matter of minutes seemed to match a season-long theme for the Gators who have been haunted all year by set piece goals.
“We need to work on defending set pieces,” Hamm said. “I think it’s pretty obvious that almost all of our losses are from set piece goals.”
Sophomore defender Laura Shea agreed.
“Honestly we just can’t foul anymore,” Shea said. “We have to stop being dumb and can’t give up silly fouls on our side of the field.”
The loss causes serious doubt whether the Gators will make the playoffs. They will need some help from other teams in the standings, but the players are only focusing on what they can control.
“We need to stay focused knowing that anything could happen in our conference,” Stout said.
“It’s anyone’s conference still so we just need to focus on our attack and keep playing.”
The Gators hope to right the ship on their season next Friday here at Cox Stadium when they take on Cal State San Bernardino.
