SF State’s wrestling team held down the Swamp today at the SF State JC Open, winning one weight class and placing in two others.

Redshirt Junior and Sacramento City College transfer Tyson Kuahine twisted up and out of the bottom position to gain control of his opponent, scoring a reversal late in the third period that would win him the 165 pound weight class title match.

“I knew if I stayed out of the ties I could eventually get my shot off,” said Kuahine. “It was the little things like circling one way instead of the other. We’ve trained very hard for this.”

The team’s unattached wrestlers fought far into tournament as well. Both Trevor Perez and Robert Enmon garnered fourth place in the 141 and 285 pound classes respectively. Christian Ramos and Josh Villaflor, both freshman, fell a match early of podium honors.

Junior Gabe Fuentes and freshman Mike Marshall, slugged out wins in the 174 pound consolation bracket before puttering out a match before third place. The competition was strong and familiar according to Marshall.

“In the first match I ran into the guy that beat me in the consolation semis at state last year,” Marshall said. “I had a few good matches and two close matches with him.”

Although the tournament attracted many big name universities, Head Coach Lars Jensen decided to use it as a learning experience for some of the younger wrestlers.

“Everything is a progression. We were just seeing where we stand against live competition,” Jensen said. “We have 15 more dates and five or six tournaments so this is just a start.”

Jensen, while pleased with how his team performed, said the team needed to improve quite a bit before their next match.

“We need to finish our takedowns, we’re getting in there deep but were not finishing especially in the scramble position,” Jensen said. “We have a point to start on so now we work on our tendencies and get better.”
