A high-rise in Parkmerced had to be evacuated early this morning after a fire broke out, hospitalizing two people.

San Francisco firefighters responded to the call at 125 Cambon Drive at about 5:45 a.m. where they rescued three victims from a blazing seventh-floor apartment.

Two of the victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, one in serious condition, and a third victim did not need medical assistance, according to SFGate. Public Information Officer Lt. Jonathan Baxter said there is no reason to believe that the victims were SF State students.

The Red Cross assisted an undisclosed number of displaced tenants and an orange house cat was reported missing.

Jun Tankai, a third-year BECA major who lives on the second floor of the building, was among those evacuated this morning. He says it is the second fire he has experienced in the building since he moved in two and a half years ago in addition to a slew of false alarms.

“These repeated fires and false alarms are becoming inconveniences to our building,” said Tankai.

“A lot of people ignore fire alarms because they assume it’s a false alarm,” said Baxter. “But fire alarms also go off when there’s a real fire – that’s what they’re for.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
