The Gators softball team went 1-2 in the 2019 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Tournament this past weekend, averaging only three runs per game throughout the tourney.

SF State fell to Cal State Bernardino 3-9 in their first game. With the conference postseason a double-elimination style tournament the Gators still had a chance at their championship aspirations.

In their second game of the tournament, the Gators defeated the top-seeded UC San Diego 3-0. However, the team dropped their final game of the tournament to Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-7. Sonoma State would eventually be crowned the 2019 CCAA softball champions.

The underwhelming performance from the Gators may come from a lack of experience.

“We definitely came out nervous,” freshman outfielder Tianna Jacques said. “This is the first time anyone on our team has been to a conference tournament, so it was nerve-racking being on a bigger stage.”

The last time the Gators lost two out of three games was when they lost two in a row in late-March to Concordia, 1-7 and Western Oregon, 2-4, who the Gators face on Wednesday, May 9 in Irvine, California to kick off the 2019 NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

The Gators aren’t fazed by their early season loss against Western Oregon.

“We’re ready when it counts,” Jacques said. “We have seen them at their best and it isn’t anything we can’t handle. We are fully capable of dominating, so I’m excited to see what happens this weekend.”
