In a grueling, but thrilling, game against the Chico State Wildcats Friday, the SF State men’s basketball team overcame a late comeback and won 64-62 in overtime.

The Gators’ six seniors: Phoenix O’ Rourke, Joshua Hash, Marquel Hoskins, Ralph Nevarez, Tim Pratt, and Matt Fochtman were honored in a pre-game ceremony.  Each player, except for forward Pratt, who did not play due to a fractured lower back and will miss Tuesday’s first round playoff game, played significant minutes.

Co-captain and guard O’ Rourke scored 11 points in 31 minutes on 4-8 shooting. He made three shots from outside the three-point line and also had three steals in the game. Nevarez joined O’ Rourke in scoring 11 points. Nevarez missed only one shot in the game and collected nine total rebounds; one shy of earning him a double-double.

However, it was not a senior who led the Gators to victory on Feb. 25. Junior forward Winston Demmin finished with a double-double by scoring a game-high 15 points while grabbing 14 rebounds; including 11 on defense.

For the Wildcats, it was sophomore guard Damario Sims along with senior forward Roderick Hawkins who each scored 20 points and forced the game to go into overtime.

With the win, the Gators finish the regular season with a 16-10 overall record. They are 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. As the fourth best team in the CCAA, SF State awaits to host Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday in a first round match up of the CCAA Basketball Championships at 7 p.m. at the main gymnasium.
