For the past two weeks, sororities and fraternities have occupied the quad in hopes of recruiting new members into the Greek life. What initially began as a two-week tabling recruitment on campus will now extend for a third week with most of the sororities and fraternities returning, according to Janelle Martinez, a recruiter from a Chicana/Latina sorority, Delta Chapter SF State.

The process of joining a sorority or fraternity on campus begins with finding the group that best suits one’s interests, and in the end, makes you comfortable, Tamika McWhorter from the Alpha Kappa Omicron Chapter said. SF State has 29 different Greek life organizations, ranging from separate men and women memberships to co-ed memberships.

For Amy Gooding, a member of Rho Delta Chi Chapter, Greek life is an important aspect of college that students should take advantage of, especially at SF State since it’s a commuter school.

“Everyone just comes and goes, and it’s hard to make friends, but through a sorority, you join a community that you otherwise wouldn’t have,” Gooding said. “You literally find a home away from home.”
