Gator men's starting goalkeeper and captain sidelined for the season

“My position always means staying focused (because) any mental lapse can cost us a goal,” Scolman said. “A lot of things can go wrong and we have to stay positive.”

Scolman is ready and eager to fill the shoes as the goalkeeper for the SF State men’s soccer team, despite his injury. Although he also recognizes the pressures of the position, he knows what the job entails and hopes he can help his team get to the playoffs.

“(Scolman) has been doing really well,” McNeill said. “He’s definitely stepping up.”

Hunter said that he feels the irony of the situation is that goalkeeping has been one of the team’s most solid positions in the last few games.

“People find motivation in a lot of different ways. I don’t have a problem with it. He’s doing a good job,” Hunter said of Scolman’s efforts, despite his hurt knee. “But now (Scolman) has to keep his job, (Comer) is going to push him.”

Comer was cleared to play as of Friday, after being out for a little more than two weeks due to the concussion. Schussel said a player with a concussion could be cleared one week after being asymptomatic. Hunter knows the importance of keeping Scolman and Comer fit. If one of the two were to be seriously injured, there would only be one player to rely on. Hunter said because of McNeill’s early injury, it’s important that Scolman and Comer remain healthy and positive to help lead the team.
