Power Outage disrupts SFSU campus, Administration urges morning classes to be held remotely

The outage lasted about two hours, PG&E expects full restoration later today

A power outage affected part of San Francisco State University’s main campus for about two hours this morning. The outage caused some morning classes to be canceled and rendered certain facilities almost useless.

SFSU sent two text message alerts within that time. The first announced a power outage and the second urged for classes starting before noon to be moved to remote learning.

However, some classes that started around the same time of the outage continued through the blackout. Xavier Coloyan, a communications major, had just finished their 8 a.m. class in the Humanities Building before power was restored.

“I walked into the Humanities Building, it was just pitch black in there,” Coloyan said. “I just thought that it’s probably going to be an old-school kind of teaching day.”

The power returned around 9:45 a.m. PG&E said on their website that the complete power restoration is expected at 11:30 a.m.

SFSU sent another text message update at 10:30 a.m., which stated that power had been restored to campus and that all in-person classes after noon could resume as scheduled.

Kent Bravo, SFSU’s media relations specialist, said that power distribution lines to campus were disrupted, causing some –– but not all –– buildings to lose power. Backup generators allowed some buildings to continue operating.

SFSU Campus Recreation received approval to reopen the Mashouf Wellness Center at noon, but the Natatorium is scheduled to be closed for the rest of the day and will return to regular operating hours on Wednesday.
