The 12 remaining contestants of SF State’s Voice competition took to the Jack Adams Hall stage for the final round Wednesday, Oct. 23, giving the singers one last chance to prove their worthiness to take the title of the SF State Voice 2013.

Unlike last week’s battle round, which required members of the same team to collaborate on a song, the final singing round gave contestants the artistic freedom to arrange and perform a song of their choice.

“From the beginning, everybody was good that we picked. But towards the end there was so much improvement,” judge Steven Alvarez said.

With the event coming to a close, contestants reflected upon the positive experiences that they have had with the competition.

“I really appreciate that they held this event, I’ll have a great memory of this,” said Yuan Feng, a marketing major who sang Coldplay’s “The Scientist” for his final performance.

“It changed me,” chemistry major Kimi Hariri said. “It made me more confident in my singing.”

The competition provided more than just a musical outlet for contestants, many personal relationships were formed through their experience.

“It’s cool to see this type of talent on campus,” said Sean Thompson, a music composition major. “I made a lot of really good friends too.”

Although the judges had to make hard decisions and cut people from the competition, they also found themselves fostering relationships with the contestants as well.

“So many close friends were made after this,” Alvarez said. “We took it to a family level. We know that we are going to work with these people in the future outside of the show, just to do other stuff.”

Now that the competition is over, the fate of the contestants now hangs in the hands of the voters. Voting is open to anyone by visiting the Student Life website at http://dos.sfsu.edu/voice. The voting period ends on Oct. 29 at 11:59 p.m.

For those who were not able to attend the final round, Student Life will provide a video recap of the contestants final performances on their YouTube channel.

The winner will be announced at next week’s finale, which will be in Jack Adams Hall at 7 p.m. The free show will feature performances from all singers throughout the competition.
