Explaining five points of contention between the top presidential candidates

Reproductive Rights

  • Supports national right to abortion 
  • Has vowed to sign laws restoring reproductive rights and will eliminate the filibuster to do so
 

  • Inconsistent:
    While Trump has in the past said he supports a nationwide ban, he has recently said he supports leaving it up for states to decide.

Immigration & Border Security

  • Supports restrictions on asylum seekers
  • Wants to attempt to secure private funding for development projects in Latin America to address the root of migration
  • Enacted sweeping anti-immigration policies during his last presidency which included separating migrant children from their guardians
  • Wants to detain and deport undocumented immigrants

Foreign Policy & War

  • Supports NATO and other military alliances 
  • Wants to continue to send military aid to Ukraine 
  • Wants to protect the United States against China’s economic practices, but not cut ties with China entirely
  • Critical of alliances such as NATO
  • Hesitant to support Ukraine with more military aid
  • Has indicated the desire to terminate the United State’s economic dependency on China

Healthcare

  • Supports expanding the Affordable Care Act
  • Provide Medicare coverage for long-term at-home care
  • Expand direct negotiations between pharmaceutical companies and Medicare in regard to drug prices 
  • Does not support the Affordable Care Act
  • Currently has the concept of a plan on how to replace the Affordable Care Act

Climate Change

  • Supports Biden’s climate policies
  • Has supported clean energy initiatives in the past
  • No longer supports a fracking ban
  • During his presidency, cut over 100 environmental regulations
  • Promised to rescind all of the Biden administration’s climate regulations
  • Supports unfettered oil and gas drilling
