UPDATE 7:43 P.M.: Susan Shimanoff, the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal and Creative Arts, told students that she needed clearance from campus police. After borrowing a phone from a student who was trying to re-enter the building, Shimanoff called campus police for clearance. Students are waiting for campus police to come and give permission to enter the building.

UPDATE 7:38 p.m.: San Francisco Fire Department left the scene at approximately 7:37 p.m. The fire was extinguished.

A small fire broke out in the men’s bathroom of the third floor of the Humanities Building today at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Students evacuated as fire alarms sounded throughout the building. Thomas Figg-Hoblyn saw a fire in the trash can of the bathroom.

“I opened the door and on the floor, the top of the trash can was on fire,” he said. He reported that campus police responded quickly and extinguished the small blaze.

The San Francisco Fire Department arrived on the scene around 7:25.

Updates will follow as the situation develops.
