Professors and students picket chancellor's visit

Students and faculty picketed at California State University East Bay Monday as CSU Chancellor Charles Reed met with school President Mohammad H. Qayoumi to discuss the president’s upcoming transfer to San Jose State University.

The transition is slated to take place at the end of the academic year.

“Today is sort of a symbolic representation of opponents of Chancellor Reed’s administration,” said Frank Quintana, president of Students for Quality Education at CSUEB. “We understand that we may not see Chancellor Reed, but we are out here and it is important that they know we are here.”

Members of the California Faculty Association and SQE gathered just before 9 a.m. at the Student Services and Administration building to pass out fliers, picket against budget cuts, and demand fair contracts and quality education.

As Dianne Rush Woods, chair of the academic senate at CSUEB, prepared for a last-minute meeting with Reed she explained that the meeting was last minute, but her hope was to discuss many concerns that directly affect the campus.

“He is coming to talk to us about the campus,” Woods said. “We want to ask him some types of questions about what our concerns are. We want to hear what is going to happen and who our president will be.”

Nicholas Baham, associate professor and chair of the department of ethnic studies, showed his support by picketing and handing out fliers. “Our goal is to draw attention to a lot of the stuff that has been going on within the system and to join with our sister schools, such as San Francisco State, to present a unified voice,” he said
